Yang Shouyu (1896–1981)
The Jiangsu-born master who created random stitch embroidery by weaving the brushwork of Western painting into the language of the Chinese needle.
Zhu Feng (1910–1993)
A disciple of Yang Shouyu who translated the pointillism of Western painting into a new embroidery language of dotted colour.
Ren Huixian (1916–2003)
The National Master of Arts and Crafts hailed as the "modern goddess of the needle," who gave random stitch embroidery its signature play of light and shade.
Zhang Yuying (b. 1935)
National Master of Arts and Crafts and portrait embroidery specialist, trained by Zhu Feng, Ren Huixian and Li Eying.
Zhou Haiyun (b. 1965)
Jiangsu Master of Arts and Crafts and a fourth-generation inheritor of random stitch embroidery, whose state-gift needlework has been shown from the Louvre to the Japanese National Diet.
Lu Xiaolin (b. 1989)
Suzhou embroiderer and inventor of the patented "Four-Proof" silk thread — the first to publicly perform double-sided three-difference embroidery, praised byMarie Clairefor her "flowing stitches."
